Looking at it pragmatically, The Biggest Loser this year is allowing for the biggest number of fitness possibilities. It is allowing a greater number of people to participate in a weight loss journey which is encouraged and supervised. It is shooting more arrows out into the wider community. It is demonstrating the number of options you have to lose weight, gain health and work on your fitness. It is showing everyone, that no matter what, you grab hold of that opportunity when it is put before you and you grab hold of it with both hands and you hang on to it. You stay true to it. Which is why Courtney, Patti and Munnalita remain a thorn in the side. They have proven beyond any shadow of a doubt that if you stick to hard headed strategy , you can upend common purpose and manipulate it to your own will through alliance and good strategy. The three of them are there thanks to the hard work and sacrifice of others. They have used strategy and strength in numbers to their advantage so that others can leave the show. Christie was bucketed last year for losing 8 kilos from water loading. Looking at her in the ads now it’s all water under the bridge but she was rightly held to account for subverting good practice and having a weigh in advantage which kept her in the finals. Munnalita has been regularly pulling 3. something kilos and suddenly 9 comes out of the hat and it’s just odd. Damien, who is only now at the weight others started at comes in 6th after losing 40 odd kilos and being a tower of strength for his team and hauling his backside through heaven knows what to keep the team on target. He’s played a team game. P’eta was launched into the show by a stone and rocket launched out by a stone and Munnalita. Now we have the outsiders and yes, lots of people are getting a chance to participate and gain motivation. Lots of changes are provided for stimulation and focus, but in the end the Gregs and Mels are voted off because of the group dynamics, and their commitment to weight loss, challenges and a new, healthy life style are not valued in the show. I was not as upset as I thought I would be seeing Kim and Chris come in. Chris is so young and already on such a dangerous path. Kim deserves the chance to lick her weight problem and the humiliation which goes with it. The Commando has demonstrated he can turn the weak into the strong and Shannan has gone in as an unbiased trainer and given it all he has and has become genuinely excited and challenged by the new kids on the block. Michelle is loyal to her team still. We get to see how different trainers train and promote the wellbeing of others. We see how trainers can focus and challenge their trainees. It will be interesting, but many of the points made tonight about the fairness of it are right…but in the long run, I suppose it’s better to expose as many people as possible to the right path. Who wins will say it all in terms of the validity of the show.
