Teens healthier if mums working : “A new US study, Welfare, Children and Families: A Three City Study, also finds adolescents with mothers on welfare experience greater psychological distress than those whose mothers have reliable employment.”
It probably is true. There are studies which suggest that working women take better care of themselves and that they have a better self image. That is probably transferred to their families. It is also evident in underdeveloped countries if you feed, nurture and educate the women, then their children will have better health and lives. Lots of programmes are developed and delivered on this thesis. I wonder , too, whether working women take recourse to easy meals and take aways because they have the money? I wonder if their children are anxious because they do not have access to parents or if the parents are too tired to cope with children? Women went to work because stay at home Mums were getting depressed and losing interest in themselves and their families. I wonder if it changes form country to country? Now we have had women working for a while I think we are in the position to look at what impact it has had on the lives of children. We need to do that now while we have access to the older women who stayed at home.
