Dates: “Dates are extremely nutritious, containing more natural sugar than any other fruit. The fruits contain protein, Vitamin A, and some of the B vitamins; but it is not a perfectly balanced food.”
Even though we’ve been through sticky date pudding and date and walnut cake phases we have never just eaten dates. All of a sudden we are eating fresh dates. I have always bought them at the Adelaide markets when I go there but people have been bringing them to work and it’s one of those things which has just taken off. A number of people are trying to keep their weight down , so a fresh date is the very thing. It satisfies that sweet craving and is quite filling. We have been getting everyone into them and we pop into the fruit shop and get more to keep spreading the word. Some people do not like dried dates, but these fresh ones are just so yummy! Suddenly we love just eating them…probably because we have had our fill of cake. We can grow dates here in Australia and date palms are everywhere but they don’t always fruit. Dates are great for kids too instead of sweets…they can have them mixed with other finger food as long as you take out the seed.
