Britain puts parents of obese kids on notice : “The Foresight report laid bare the life-threatening consequences for children growing up fat, predicting a 70 per cent rise in type 2 diabetes, a 30 per cent increase in strokes and a 20 per cent lift in coronary disease. The heightened risk of such conditions is estimated to reduce life expectancy by as much as 13 years.”
formally drawing the attention of parents to the excess weight of their children will hopefully encourage parents to take action. That is the belief. Will it? It is at least combined with routine health checks in primary schools in Britain so it is not a random act. We have turned a blind eye to overweight children. We have been feeding them wrongly and over indulging them. We now have childhood activities which are more sedentary and we have children kept indoors instead of outside because of predators. We have to do something. This might work and I hopw it does, but I think it will create a lot of shame and compound problems unless there are some good support mechanisms in place…like follow ups with health clinics.
