Positive results deserve greater focus : “This remarkable 43 per cent fall in youth suicide is likely to be the result of many social and health factors, and these include a wide range of public health and health service initiatives. Australian and international data indicate that increased access to a wide range of medical and psychological treatments for depression played a major part in this success story.”
Those figures are something to be really pleased about and we need to keep up the momentum. We are obviously doing things better and it is important to find out what. We have used online sites more and we have been more open and honest in our discussions of the really tricky things no one wants to talk about. Our kids need to live. We need to keep them engaged with life. We need to look at the things which bring them down and allow them to have better options. Noticing is so important and I think we have been better at noticing and we have not apologised for trying to get help for people we think are depressed. You cannot save and help everyone, but we can have better approaches and ways of managing things no one wants to talk about.
