Miner Xstrata faces lead lawsuits : “In September 2006, Queensland Health ordered the blood screening of 400 of Mount Isa’s children after a story in The Australian raised concerns about lead poisoning. It is finalising the report ahead of a public forum in Mount Isa next month.”
Lead poisoning is an issue which is too slowly resolved in Australia. It happens because of our mines. No company should be allowed to make money at the expense of inhabitants of an area nor the environment. I’d like to think we are more responsible and can think better and more strategically than this. No one should have lead contamination. No child should suffer from it. The impact is awful. Just awful. But lead is not the only pollutant and Xstrata is not the only company. I think we need to be more circumspect and considerate when we seek to make money. This is 2008 and there are lots of things we can do and know now which we couldn’t before. Of course people want jobs and money, but it amazes me we don’t think this through properly and look after ourselves and the environment in which we live.
