Pathologist Ashley Bush, head of the Oxidation Biology Laboratory at Melbourne’s Mental Health Research Institute, has a theory about what goes wrong. If he’s right, it could not only lead to the first disease-modifying treatment for Alzheimer’s disease, but it could also produce Australia’s first home-grown blockbuster drug.
Again, we have some research which may well produce a drug which will help with the treatment of Alzheimer’s. it is something we have brought out into the open, something we have learned to live with but we are always looking for relief. If you know someone with Alzheimer’s you know how much it destroys them over time and you know how disturbing and heartbreaking it is for the family. This research is based on some very solid thinking and increasingly we are finding researchers who can come up with very logical lines of inquiry based on their observations, hunches and expertise. Time and again this method is bringing us relief. The clinical trials so far are posiitve so I hope it continues down this path and the dreaded side effects which might occur will be easily dealt with. The next stage after the treatment is always dealing with side effects.
