The Productivity Commission has recommended the federal government pay new mothers or fathers for 18 weeks of parental leave.
It’s important in those early weeks to have contact with your child…to be able to devote yourself to parenting and its new routines. Very little attention is given to the adjustments you have to make on every front. Then there is the bonding. It is critical so that emotional issues don’t blow out down the track. We want people to work and we need to help them get through their parenting in the early stages especially for a first baby. To convert the baby bonus to parental leave would be a great way to help new parents who might also be able to manage some extra leave themselves and thereby take longer off. We need to support people in their different life stages if we wish them to remained engaged with the work force.
